Tipton County is located in West Tennessee, 18 miles north of Memphis. Covington is the county seat and largest of eight incorporated towns. Atoka, Brighton, and Munford are located in South Tipton County. Tipton County offers the advantages of small-town living with the nearby amenities of a major city. The prevailing climate is temperate, offering four distinct seasons. The average annual average temperature is 59.7. The monthly average high temperature for January is 46.0 and for July 91.2. Transportation

Tipton County is linked to Memphis by the four-lane U.S. Highway 51, which is approx. 25 miles to access Interstate 40 and 20 miles to access Interstate 55. Covington Municipal Airport features a 5,000-foot runway that can accommodate small jets and all twin-engine airplanes. The airport boasts a modern terminal building with facilities for pilots, meetings, and services. Millington Municipal Airport is also located approx. 10 miles south of Tipton Co. Nearby Memphis International Airport provides 350 flights daily to all major cities and serves as a headquarters for Federal Express and a hub for Northwest Airlines.


Government

The Tipton County Government is composed of the County Executive and a board of twenty-one commissioners. The cities of Atoka, Brighton, and Munford have a Mayor and Alderman form of government.


Medical Facilities

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Tipton is a modern, fully accredited facility that handles general medical, surgical, and obstetrical patients. The hospital has 300 employees and is equipped with 100 beds. In July of 2000, a six-bed observation unit was added adjacent to the Emergency Room. This will accommodate up to 23 hour care that does not require admission into the hospital.Currently there are two construction projects, including the renovation of the Chapel. Also, the Radiology department is undergoing a major renovation to enable the hospital to better serve patients and families. Other medical services available in Tipton County include Professional Counseling Services, Covington Manor Nursing Center, Covington Care Center, REMS Tipton Ambulance Service, and the Tipton County Health Department. In addition, there are eight doctors in the South Tipton County area and Mid-South Physical Therapy and Fitness Center.

Newspapers

Tipton County is served by two weekly newspapers, The Covington Leader and The Millington Star. The Memphis Commercial Appeal is delivered daily in the county. Several other Memphis weeklies are available.


Recreation

West Tennessee abounds in opportunities for outdoor sports, including fishing and hunting. The Mississippi River is one of the popular locations. Other attractions in South Tipton County are a s follows:

Glen Springs Lake - The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency has recently constructed a recreational fishing lake of over 300 acres. The lake is located 20 miles north of Memphis, off Wilkinsville and Munford-Drummonds Road, about 6 1/2 miles west of Munford. The facilities include two fishing piers, 280 and 180 feet in length, covered boat dock with spots for 32 rental boats, two launching ramps, bait and tackle shop, club house, restrooms, and two picnic pavilions.

Forest Hills Golf Course - Forest Hills Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course near Drummonds. The Chamber hosts its annual golf tournament at this course.

Atoka Community Park and Ball Fields - The Atoka Community Park was built in 1992 and includes four modern softball fields. Future plans include construction of a complete park, reflecting the railroad history of Atoka. In the nearby city park, there is a walking and jogging track with train theme playground equipment.

Beaver Community Park - The Beaver Community Park is located at the corner of Holly Grove and Candy Lane Road. The park features playground equipment and a walking and jogging track.

Munford City Park - The Munford City Park, located on College Street, features a walking and jogging track, playground equipment, and gazebo for summertime activites with the family. It is also conveniently located next door to the Munford Library and nearby the city´s Recreational Center. Two tennis courts are located behind City Hall.

Munford Park and Recreation Center - Located at 63 College Street, the center offers a wide variety, aerobics, skating, hunter saftey courses, etc., plus daily events for senior citizens. Call Paula Davenport at 837-5965.

Valentine Regional Park - 107-acre complex, lake, horse arena, ball fields, soccer fields, and bike and nature trails.


Housing

Tipton County is the fifth fastest growing county in Tennessee and the fastest growing county in West Tennessee. The majority of this growth centers in South Tipton County. With low mortgage rates, new home construction is booming. The cost of land depends on its location. One acre of land in a subdivision could range from $10,000 to $25,000. The cost of an acre of rural land is approximately $5,000. The cost of a 2,000 to 2,500 square foot house would be between $100,000 and $150,000.
